At a certain age, most women begin worrying about their appearance, more specifically, the appearance of wrinkles. Dun dun dun! How many of us worried about our looks are paying attention to our décolletage though? The décolletage is a French word describing the low cut neckline of a dress, but is also used to refer to a woman’s upper torso – neck, shoulders, chest, back. It is often the first area where signs of aging become apparent. This skin is as fragile as the skin around the eyes, yet most of us forget to treat it as such. It receives the most sun exposure and has limited natural sebum production, which means it is often the first place to show premature aging.
5 Ways to Avoid Signs of Aging for your Décolletage
- Use SPF
- Stay Hydrated
- Include your décolletage in your skincare routine
- Use collagen supplements or collagen stimulating skincare
- Avoid side sleeping
Use SPF. Sun damage is the number one reason for premature aging. Your neck and chest are most often exposed to damaging UV rays, yet contain less melanocytes, which give your skin color and protect against those UV rays. The skin is also very thin and fragile, allowing damage to happen more quickly. Wearing sufficient SPF to protect against those harmful rays is one of the top ways to prevent sun damage and premature aging. I recently received the Gold Bond Ultimate Neck and Chest Age Defense Cream in an Influenster spring voxbox. It’s only $9 at Walmart, smells AMAZING, and has 20 SPF. So go get yourself some of this for daily care & loving of your neck & chest!
Stay Hydrated. Seems like a “duh” recommendation, but you’d be surprised to know how many people forget the role dehydration plays into skin health. You should be drinking at least half your body weight in water to maintain healthy hydration. Skincare with emollients and hyaluronic acid help draw and maintain hydration in the skin, but the best way to hydrate is from within. So get to drinking that water, babe!
Include your décolletage in your skincare routine. If you’re not bringing your serums and moisturizers down your neck to your chest, you’re not doing it right. Either find skincare targeted for the décolletage or bring your facial skincare down. Your neck and chest’s delicate skin produces less sebum than your face and requires a little more care to keep it supple and moisturized.
Incorporate a collagen supplement or collagen stimulant into your daily routine. Collagen is a protein that keeps skin looking plump and bouncing back – this is called elasticity. As you age, your collagen production decreases exponentially so the best way to keep it up is to take supplements and use skincare that stimulates collagen production. Collagen peptides are how collagen is broken down to a degree that is easily absorbed by the body. These supplements have been known to help increase skin elasticity and moisture levels as well as positively affect hair and joint health. Collagen stimulating skincare like hydrofacials, vitamin C, peptides, chemical exfoliators, and LED light devices, have proven to stimulate collagen production.
Avoid side sleeping. Try to get in the habit of sleeping on your back or stretching out in a way to avoid curling up on your side, which can lead to more wrinkling and sagging of your skin.
There are plenty of other reasons how and why wrinkles appear on your neck and chest so this is by all means not an exhaustive list. Stress, age, and genetics also play a role, but if we can do what we can to improve our chances for better looking décolletages then why not, right?! What are you doing to improve your neck & chest skin health?!
xoxo, Kat
